Entrepreneurship Lessons From Albert Einstein

Einstein’s Entrepreneurship lessons

In the words of Sumner Redstone, “Success is not built on success. It’s built on failure. It’s built on frustration. Sometimes it’s built on catastrophe.” Thomas Edison provided a similar account of success with his famous quote, “I didn’t fail a thousand times. The light bulb was an invention with a thousand steps.” In a way, the world’s greatest inventions are oftentimes fraught by even greater adversity. The same can be said for Albert Einstein, whose last name has become synonymous with genius. To many, Einstein is the greatest scientist who ever lived. But a unique collection of Albert Einstein’s letters and papers revealed a history of struggle and failure that remind us of his humanity. These documents give us a glimpse into the undercurrents of one of the greatest minds to ever live. Based upon such texts, here are five entrepreneurship lessons anybody can learn from Albert Einstein.

  1. Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.
  2. The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.
  3. It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.
  4. Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master.
  5. Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.
  6. If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.
  7. Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.
  8. Human beings must have action; and they will make it if they cannot find it.
  9. Try not to become a success, but rather try to be of value.
  10. Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Albert Einstein said, “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” I like the quote very much, and it reminds me of how the Commission must approach its oversight mission going forward.

“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” In a similar vein, he also said, “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.”

“If A is success in life, then A = x + y + z. Work is x, play is y and z is keeping your mouth shut.”

This simple equation may show exactly what it takes to be successful in life, but the same is true for business.  Loads of hard work and determination are necessary to make any given venture a success, particularly when speaking about business.

“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”

Simply put, this is another way to say one of the most popular and overused buzzwords in business. Thinking outside the box, no matter how cliché, is oftentimes a necessary and extremely effective way to fix problems and come up with new ideas.

“Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent.  It takes a touch of genius–and a lot of courage–to move in the opposite direction”.

More often than not, success in business requires taking a leap of faith or following the path less traveled. That, however, does not make the decision to do so any easier for entrepreneurs and businesses.

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.”

Numbers and projections can only take you so far. A large part of making any business a success relies on their willingness to take chances and their ability to come up with new ideas before anyone else.

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.”

Once a business reaches a certain level of success, it becomes very easy for them to rest on their laurels and become complacent.  This is a good way for businesses to quickly get passed over by competition.  No matter how big and successful your business is, you cannot stop questioning how to improve.
